She has been exploring these materials and techniques for a decade and is now deliberately simplifying the subject of her work by emphasizing all compositional elements, with the element of color being treated categorically. Belliveau uses different visual strategies to make an analogy between the physicality of the tree as a symbol and the artist’s deep-felt relationship with language.

Belliveau manages to relate her visual ideas with the technical means at her disposal and her initial goal of communicating the essence of form and color through the dynamic action of painting. The artist invites the viewer to adopt a contemplative approach towards the body of work’s subject matter in order to further question our perceptions of nature, culture, and language.

COULEURS is a body of work which addresses all social strata with the simplicity of its subject and the use of the tree and its roots as a universal symbol. The goal of the artist is to sensitize the viewer to the relationship between visual, spoken, and written language. Rebecca Belliveau thus invites the viewer to question and interpret similarities and differences manifest across various cultural landscapes.

ARTIST STATEMENT

COULEURS deals with the symbolism of the tree. In its evolution over periods of time, as well as with the expansion of geography, the French language has grown and developed. Today, it has innumerable branches, new versions of the language and a vast variety of dialects, much in the same way that we find organic varieties in the thousands of species of trees on the planet. This life and its evolution are possible thanks to its roots: they exist underground and are therefore invisible but are as large and important as the tree itself. Without roots, the evolution and the life of trees – just like those of language – would not have been possible. When looking back in time for the roots of the French lan-guage, we find Latin. Each painting of the series COULEURS has words integrated from one of the oldest known texts in the world, Andronicus’s Latin translation of Homer’s Odyssey. The story of Homer’s Odyssey is that of a heroic and imaginary voyage. It is analogous to the expansion and evolution of our language: the magical journey of the French language throughout the world for millennia.

COULEURS was conceived and created during an artist res-idency in the region of Solesmes, in the north of France, during March 2019. The theme around this series of paint-ings was to make a visual analogy between francophones throughout the world and the various species of trees that exist in nature

BIOGRAPHIE
